This was a hard week. There has been so much pain in our national dialogue, and people have died here and around the world in acts of terror. I've felt so helpless seeing everything happening around me, and its been difficult to find words to explain everything to our children. We decided that we had to go to Charlottesville - to pay our respects to those who lost their lives while fighting for justice.

This man had brought a truck full of flowers. He asked everyone around if they wanted to lay them down. He didn't charge anything for them - he just wanted to bring us together in remembering Heather Heyer.
The same man who brought all the flowers was touching up parts of this message he had written earlier: "Jesus of Nazareth said this, You have heard it said, an eye for an eye. But I tell you - Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you."

Heather Heyer's memorial service was at Paramount Theatre - just one block from where she died.

New City Arts at Welcome Gallery had an amazing project steps from Water Street. Community members had written letters that were available for those walking by. The kids chose one, and inside was the most beautiful drawing and poem.

Be Still in Haste (from Poetry)
Wendell Berry
How quietly I
begin again
from this moment
looking at the
clock, I start over
so much time has
passed, and is equaled
by whatever
split-second is present
from this
moment this moment
is the first
