I can't believe how long its taken for us to get this bathroom done! It has been almost a year since we moved in, and our contractors did a great job making this room, but we've taken forever to hang the mirror and put up art. This bathroom is in the basement, and it used to be a room with just a toilet (not even a sink) but now it's the best bathroom in the house!
The bathroom is actually bigger than it looks - its actually the same size as the kitchen, and sits directly under it.
This is what the basement looked like before we did any renovations. The toilet room was the little inset to the left of alcove. Now the shower is in the space of the alcove, we opened up the toilet room and then built a wall several feet in front it all to close in the bathroom. Next month you can see what we did to the rest of the basement!
See? Toilet room...
We have a funny story about the shower. We had talked to our contractor about a 4'x4' shower. He agreed, but I guess the instruction got lost with his workers. They framed out a 2'x3' shower, and then we saw it, and said, "No, that is not our shower...." Anyway, it was ok, but they did have to rework it. The walls inside the shower are tiled with white subway tile, and the floor of the shower is marble hexagon tile.
This is a photo from Praia de Ursa, in Portugal. I took this picture after climbing down the cliff for two hours with our tiny kids, with Ritter, my dad, and my brother Paul. It was an amazing day. You can only reach this beach by doing this crazy climb... Anyway, for some reason people love this photo - it's my best seller on Minted!
Just so you know, we don't actually keep Ritter's razor there - it wouldn't be advisable with three little kids - but it looks pretty, right?
A photo from Convento de Cristo, in Tomar, Portugal. We decided to outfit this whole bathroom from our trips to Portugal. Miss it so much...
We got most of the things in the bathroom from IKEA. The mirrors, sconces, vanity, faucet, bamboo chair, etc. The bamboo accessories with white bands are from Target, and the bamboo shelf is actually from ALDI.
The photo is again mine, of the Arco da Rua Agusta, Lisbon. You can see the marble floor tiles here - it made me feel like we were back in Portugal - all of you native Portuguese, you know what I mean. Ritter was against it for a while - he thought it might feel too cold, but it doesn't! The tile is from Home Depot, and you can find the link to it here. I gotta tell you - it is natural stone, so make sure you check each box to see if the vein is similar enough to use together in your space!
We thought it might be fun to put a mirror down low for the kids. They love it! Here its reflecting my shelves from my studio next door. Can't wait to show you guys that room next!
And lastly, detail shots! Isn't that shower floor tile great? Unfortunately, its marble... so you can't use anything harsh to clean it, so we used baking soda and pine sol to clean it - anybody have any great ideas to making cleaning grout between marble tile easier? Let me know in the comments. Thanks!
