I met Charlie at Union Station on a cold Sunday afternoon. He was holding up this sign that had to be turned over to complete his message. When asked exactly what his message meant, he explained that this country is too afraid of speaking the truth. He believes that we as a society have become too politically correct about words that we can and cannot say, but fall short in areas that are more important.
Charlie is from Georgia. He has been arrested for stripping naked on the steps of the Supreme Court, and has been accused of unlawful entry to a Georgia congressman's office. He had a court hearing the next day, and when I asked him what he would say in his defense, he said, "Yahweh has commanded me." He said he did not unlawfully enter the congressman's office. He just showed up every day to meet his congressman, but "just as they falsely accused my savior Jesus," they wanted him gone, so they accused him of breaking in.
On Christmas day Charlie was interviewed on Channel 4 at a homeless shelter. He was asked how he felt about people bringing food and providing this space. He said he had answered with only one word - "destitute." He has given up everything - his wife, children, house, and cars, to be here to "preach the truth."
